The Health Insurance Fund at the Governors' retreat in Nigeria
On 26th October 2007, Chairman of the Health Insurance Fund Kees Storm presented the Fund’s community health insurance program to the Governors’ forum, which represents all 36 states, in Nigeria. It was a unique occasion, as the leaders of the states had gathered for the first retreat of governors of Nigeria in history. Also present was President Umaru Yar’Adua, who took office in May of this year. They discussed development policies for the federal states.
The Health Insurance Fund was invited to the retreat by Dr Bukola Saraki, governor of Kwara State and chairman of the governors’ forum. Dr Bukola Saraki is highly supportive of the Fund’s Community Health Plan in his state. He considers the insurance plan as a top priority for the development of his state. So much so, that he wanted to expand the program to other communities in his own state and to other states as well.
The Health Insurance Fund presentation was received enthusiastically by the audience. Two of the governors have since then already approached the Health Insurance Fund to set up a health insurance scheme in their states.
After the presentation, Kees Storm and the managing director of the Fund, Chris van der Vorm, met with the Minister of Health, Professor Adenike Grange, to discuss how community health insurance plans can be introduced on a national level in Nigeria.
