Health Insurance Fund signs Pact of Schokland

Jul 30, 2007

On 30th June 2007, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a big event to promote the Millennium Development Goals. The Dutch Minister of Development Cooperation, Bert Koenders, signed agreements with companies, organizations and institutes to take action for the Millennium Development Goals. This is the so-called Pact of Schokland. The board and management of the Health Insurance Fund were among those who signed agreements under the Pact.

In the year 2000, 189 leaders of government agreed to support eight Millennium Development Goals that should be met by 2015. These goals include, among others, reducing poverty by half, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. On June 30th we were half way, but the current data indicates that the targets will not be reached. The Dutch government called upon society to join in the efforts to bridge the gap. In Schokland various companies, organizations, institutes and individuals signed the so-called Pact of Schokland. The pact prescribes specific actions to bring the Millennium Development Goals closer. The Health Insurance Fund programs contribute directly to the health-related Millennium Goals, and so reduce poverty. Read the agreement of the Health Insurance Fund (in Dutch).

The Pact is a result of consultations organized by Minister Koenders with 350 representatives of companies, civil society organizations, churches, trade unions and academic institutions. The Pact of Schokland originates from the ‘Project 2015’, a Dutch government project supporting the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals.
