Global Health Membership

The Global Health Membership is a worldwide consumer fund to engage the private sector in raising both awareness and funds to support access to affordable, quality healthcare for low-income groups of people in Africa.

The Global Health Membership was founded in 2013 as a joint initiative between Health Insurance Fund, Zilveren Kruis | Achmea, and other health insurers, who are uniting for better health care in resource-poor settings. In time, the initiative is expected to grow and welcome more health insurers, companies and other private partners.

The Global Health Membership envisions a movement, a call to action to unite health insurers, companies and their clients all over the world to unite for better health care in Africa. Global Health Membership believes that, together, people can make a difference and create a brighter future for millions of African families.

The contributions to the Global Health Membership go directly to the Health Insurance Fund portfolio programs. This makes the allocation of funds effective and sustainable, increasing the impact significantly.

Together we can bring about major changes in the health of many people in Africa - by supporting the Global Health Membership, you support the access to affordable, quality health care for people in Africa.

How it works
Global Health Membership is based on the idea of matching people who care to people who need care by starting a global movement that transforms our collective power as consumers into a financial empowerment that changes the health of many people’s lives in Africa.

In Africa, most people pay for their medical treatment, cash out of pocket. Usually they cannot pay these often unexpected costs at all. Medical costs therefore often result in great poverty, as people end up selling their cattle or shop – their livelihood – to pay for treatment. Besides the costs, the quality of care is a huge problem as well. Hospitals are burdened beyond capacity and there is a structural shortage of good medical equipment and well trained staff.

The idea of the Global Health Membership is to make it relatively simple to help change this situation. Global Health Membership involves companies and their clients to contribute to better access to quality health care for the lowest income groups. With as little as a few euro per month, individual policyholders can drastically improve the health situation of African families by addressing the financial constraints that limit Africans to access quality healthcare products and services.

Together we can realize the following ambitions through the programs of the Health Insurance Fund:
